Pictory and Heady both make narrated videos from text, but they get their pictures from different places. Pictory matches your script to licensed stock footage from Storyblocks and Getty Images and lets you edit the result as text. Heady generates its own visuals: one illustrated world per video, animated without a video model, plus Motion mode graphics for data and titles.

Every Pictory fact on this page was checked on 2026-10-29 against the sources at the end. Plans change; confirm on their page before buying.

The core difference

Pictory assembles real footage. A 2026 review describes it plainly: "Pictory doesn't generate original AI video like OpenAI's Sora or Google's Veo. It assembles existing stock footage to match your text." For topics where viewers expect real-world footage (real places, products, people at work), licensed stock is an advantage, and Pictory's libraries are large commercial ones.

Heady draws a world for each video. The first frame sets the style and every later frame is an edit of it, so the setting and characters hold together from the first minute to the last. Motion comes from depth parallax and smooth transitions between frames. Charts, timelines and titles can be built as animated code in Motion mode. Because nothing comes from a shared library, two Heady channels on the same topic do not end up with the same clips.

Choose Pictory if

  • You want real footage. Stock from Storyblocks and Getty Images suits topics that need recognisable real-world imagery.
  • You publish in several languages. Pictory lists 29 languages on Professional and Teams. Heady is English first.
  • You need square video. Pictory exports 1:1 as well as 16:9 and 9:16.
  • You want an API. Pictory includes API access on Teams and Enterprise.
  • You like editing by text. The review we cite calls text-based editing "the feature that separates Pictory from most competitors".

Choose Heady if

  • You want a consistent illustrated look rather than a sequence of stock clips. Every frame in a Heady video belongs to the same world.
  • You publish long videos with chapters. Heady's long-form videos have chapter cards, lower-thirds and a progress bar, and come with YouTube chapter timestamps, an SRT file and a description.
  • You want word-by-word subtitles timed to the narration.
  • Your topic needs exact on-screen numbers. Motion mode renders charts and timelines from your script as code.
  • You want AI to write the script with you. Heady drafts the outline and script from a topic; you edit any line and approve it.

Pricing, side by side

From Pictory's pricing page on 2026-10-29:

PlanMonthly billingAnnual billing (per month)Video minutes per month
Starter$29$2530
Professional$59$3590
Teams$199$119300

The free trial lasts 14 days with 300 credits (10 minutes) and up to 3 projects, exporting at 720p; paid plans export at 1080p. Some third-party reviews quote much larger minute allowances (200, 600 and 1,800 minutes); we used the figures on Pictory's own page.

Heady prices by output: 1 credit is 1 finished minute of video. See pricing for plans.

What to check before you decide

  • How your topic looks in stock footage. Search Storyblocks or Getty for a few of your scenes; if the results look generic, generated visuals may suit you better.
  • Whether you need languages other than English now. If so, Pictory is the better fit today.
  • How Pictory's captions look in your style. The review we cite describes "dozens of styling options".
